For the last 9 ½ years, Canberra Veterinary Emergency Service (CVES) have operated from our premises when we are closed. From 29 April, they are moving to new remises on the corner of the Barton and Federal Highways, Lyneham, no more than 15 minutes drive from GVH. They are also changing their name to Animal Emergency Service – Canberra (AES-C). Their new website is www.animalemergencyservice.com.au/canberra
CVES has always been independently owned and operated, entirely separate from GVH (no co-ownership). After many years of harmonious and mutually beneficial relations, CVES are leaving, purely for financial reasons. We maintain our respect for all their staff and recommend them for all your pets emergency needs when we are closed.

Out of hours services are available at The Walk in Clinic for Animals in Belconnen every evening from 7 pm to 10.30 pm. This facility provides an excellent service for intermediate grade issues (tummy upsets, eye, ear, skin problems, non-life-threatening injuries etc). They close at 10.30 pm. https://walkinclinicforanimals.com/
The Animal Referral Hospital in Pialligo is a 24/7 facility offering emergency service at all hours. They also house Canberra’s Veterinary Specialists. This service, and their current, purpose built facility, was founded by Drs Sarah Webb and Jacob Michelsen, previously based at Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital for many years. We refer to them for serious / complex medical problems and for advanced surgeries. They also have a veterinary Rehabilitation Specialist, a Behaviour Specialist, and they have relationships with visiting Ophthalmology, Cardiac and Cancer specialists. Their facilities include CT and MRI. https://www.emergencyvet.com.au/our-network/arh-home/arh-canberra.html
From 29 April 2026, no one will be at Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital overnight / weekends / public holiday to monitor any animals that may be present. Animals requiring care when we are closed will need to be transferred to AES-C or ARH (The Walk in Clinic does not provide hospitalisation). You will be responsible for the physical transfer of your pet to and from the out of hours hospital.
We will discuss your pet’s overnight care, if required, at admission, so you fully understand options, costs, and your responsibilities. We will provide adequate notice (whenever possible) if your pet needs to stay, and what you will need to do to transport your pet.
Gungahlin Vet as a practice, you as our client and pet owner, and of course the animals in our mutual care, have benefitted significantly from having CVES present at Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital. Gungahlin has been the only non-specialist veterinary practice in the ACT to have such veterinary care available overnight. You, and we, now join all the other owners and vets in Canberra in needing to send animals elsewhere for overnight and weekend care. The pets of Canberra have received a very high standard of care despite the inconvenience of needing to be transferred, and we are confident that your pets will also receive this high level of professional and compassionate care.
